Relationships are often hard work, and sometimes couples need a neutral and safe space where both partners can work together to change the relationship. The role of the therapist in couples counselling is particularly important, as he or she provides an open-minded and unbiased perspective, which can help couples to see their relationship more clearly.
What happens in a couples counselling session?
In a couples counselling session, both partners will be encouraged to tell their side of the story, and to express their thoughts and feelings about the relationship. The therapist will help the partners to improve their communication as part of this process, and to understand more about how the other partner is feeling and what they are thinking. Another important focus is helping the couple to become aware of relationship patterns, and to assist the couple in shifting these towards behaviour which is healthier for both partners.
More than just problem solving, couples counselling can also help partners to find out more about each other, and to improve the depth and quality of their relationship.
Who would benefit from couples counselling?
Any couple (married or unmarried) can benefit from couples counselling if they are struggling in their relationship. Couples counselling is more likely to be successful if both partners would like to work on and improve their relationship.
