What is Therapy?

Therapy is a term that is used to refer to the treatment of psychological or emotional issues. In therapy, the client and the therapist (usually a psychologist) meet together for sessions in order to resolve problems related to specific concerns.

Therapy focuses on exploring the causes of problematic issues, as well as focusing on self-awareness and emotional understanding. Rather than just giving advice (an approaching used more in counselling), therapy allows clients to learn more about themselves, increase their potential and grow as a person. Therapy also provides a safe space for people to express themselves without fear of judgement or negative reactions.

However, therapy can evoke emotional distress, as it often involves talking about difficult situations that are contributing to the current problem.

How long does therapy take?

The time it takes for therapy to be effective differs from person to person. Some issues can be resolved in a few sessions, whereas others may take months or years in order to come right.

Confidentiality

Confidentiality is of high importance in therapy, as a safe and trusted space is needed in order for it to be therapeutic and healing. No information about clients will be released or discussed without permission. Registered South African psychologists are ethically bound to keep confidentiality, in accordance with the Health Professional’s Council of South Africa, unless the client is in danger of hurting themselves or others. Slightly different approaches are used to manage confidentiality with children and teens.
